Curriculum

At Bell’s Barber College, we offer industry-aligned programs designed to prepare you for barbering licensure and real-world success. Our curriculum combines classroom theory with hands-on practice in a structured, supervised environment — giving you the confidence and skills you’ll need to thrive in the barbering profession.

All programs meet or exceed the minimum requirements established by the Ohio State Cosmetology and Barber Board.

Barber Program – (1800 Clock Hours)

Our core barbering program is 1800 clock hours and is designed for individuals who do not currently hold a barber or cosmetology license. This curriculum covers everything from foundational theory to advanced haircutting, shaving, sanitation, professionalism, and more.

Completion of this program meets the hour requirements set by the Ohio State Cosmetology and Barber Board for eligibility to sit for the barber licensing exams.

What You’ll Learn Includes:

  • Barbering fundamentals and advanced haircutting

  • Sanitation, disinfection, and infection control

  • Anatomy and physiology related to barbering

  • Facial shaving and grooming techniques

  • Client consultation and customer service

  • Professional ethics and barbering law

  • Practical, supervised clinic experience

Cosmetology-to-Barber Crossover Program – 1000 Clock Hours

Licensed cosmetologists or hair designers who want to expand their credentials may enroll in our 1000-hour Cosmetology-to-Barber program. This program builds on existing knowledge and focuses on barber-specific skills and competencies required for Ohio barber licensure.

Because Ohio recognizes prior training, the reduced hour requirement reflects the fact that you have already completed a full cosmetology curriculum — allowing you to reach barber licensure efficiently while still meeting state standards.

How Our Curriculum Works

At Bell’s Barber College, all programs include:

  • Classroom theory: Foundational knowledge you’ll need to understand the “why” behind the “how”

  • Supervised practical training: Hands-on experience in our student clinic under licensed instructor guidance

  • Industry best practices: Sanitation, tools & implements, client communication, and professionalism

  • State licensing preparation: Content mapped to what you’ll need to know for Ohio licensing exams

Our curriculum is intentionally structured to build from simple to advanced skills while providing repeated practice and instructor feedback.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the difference between the 1800 and 1000 programs?

The 1800-hour Barber Program is for students entering barbering without prior licensure. The 1000-hour Cosmetology-to-Barber Program is for students who already hold a valid cosmetology or hair designer license in Ohio. Both programs lead to eligibility to sit for barber licensing exams.

  • How long does it take to complete each program?

Completion times vary based on full-time or part-time schedules and attendance. Full-time students typically complete the 1800-hour program in about 12–14 months and the 1000-hour crossover in a shorter timeframe. Exact schedules depend on class offerings and pacing.

  • Will I be ready for the Ohio barber licensing exams?

Yes — our curriculum is designed with Ohio licensing requirements in mind, combining theory and supervised clinic practice so you’re prepared for both the written and practical exams required by the Ohio State Cosmetology and Barber Board.

  • Do I need to complete any specific courses?

Yes — the barbering curriculum includes state-required subjects like sanitation and infection control, anatomy and physiology basics, barber law and ethics, haircutting techniques, shaving, and client consultation skills. These are integrated into both theory and practice hours.

  • Can I work while I’m enrolled?

Many students balance school with part-time work. Talk with our admissions team to explore scheduling options and pacing that fit your life.

  • What comes after I complete the program?

After graduation, you’ll be eligible to sit for the Ohio barber licensing exams. Once you pass, you can begin your professional barbering career — whether in a barbershop, salon, or your own business.
